Reef Manta Ray

Mobula alfredi

The reef manta is the smaller of the two manta species, reaching about 4 metres across, and the one most divers encounter. They aggregate at cleaning stations and seasonal plankton blooms in warm coastal waters, which makes their movements predictable enough to plan trips around. Major destinations include the Maldives (especially Hanifaru Bay), Raja Ampat and Komodo in Indonesia, the Big Island of Hawaii for the famous night dives, and Coral Bay in Western Australia. Never touch or chase them; stay low, breathe quietly, and let the ray decide how close to come.
