Pygmy Seahorse

Hippocampus bargibanti (and related species)

Pygmy seahorses are the macro photographer's benchmark subject: under two centimetres long, perfectly mimicking the purple or yellow gorgonian sea fans they live on, and almost impossible to spot without a guide who already knows where they are. Several species exist — Bargibant's (H. bargibanti), Denise's (H. denise), Pontoh's (H. pontohi) — each with slightly different hosts and distributions. Lembeh, Bunaken, Raja Ampat, and Anilao in the Philippines are the main destinations. Good buoyancy and a respect for the gorgonian — no touching, no prolonged strobe work on a single animal — are required.
