Nusa Penida sits in a deep channel off the southeast corner of Bali and is best known for two things: resident reef mantas at Manta Point and seasonal ocean sunfish at Crystal Bay. Water can be unexpectedly cold here — the Indonesian Throughflow pushes Pacific deep water through the channel, dropping temperatures to around 20°C during the July–October mola season. Currents are frequently strong and downcurrents are a real risk; this is not a Bali-beginner destination.
