Sperm Whale

Physeter macrocephalus

The sperm whale is the largest toothed predator on earth, hunting squid at depths of a thousand metres or more between long breaths at the surface. Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean hosts a resident family of sperm whales and is one of very few places in the world that permits regulated in-water encounters — on snorkel only, under a strict permit. The Azores is a second notable sperm whale destination. Outside those locations, sighting is largely a matter of luck on oceanic crossings.
