Giant Oceanic Manta Ray

Mobula birostris

The giant or oceanic manta is the larger of the two manta species — wingspans exceed 7 metres in the biggest individuals. Unlike reef mantas, giants are genuinely pelagic and show up at remote offshore seamounts rather than coastal cleaning stations. The Revillagigedos (Socorro) in Mexico is the premier destination, with Isla de la Plata in Ecuador, the Azores, and Nusa Penida in Bali also reliable. Giants often show deliberate interest in divers — hovering, circling, making eye contact — encounters that stay with you.
