Humpback Whale

Megaptera novaeangliae

Humpbacks are the most encounter-friendly of the great whales — curious, acrobatic, and reliably present at predictable breeding and feeding grounds. A handful of destinations permit regulated in-water swims: Silver Bank in the Dominican Republic (January–April), Vava'u in Tonga (July–October), Moorea and Rurutu in French Polynesia, Socorro in Mexico, and Ningaloo in Western Australia. Encounters are snorkel-only under strict permits; scuba is prohibited in most jurisdictions. The singing of males in breeding season is one of the great sensory experiences in the ocean — you feel it in your chest before you hear it.
